Cheng is deeply influenced by the techniques and philosophies of traditional Chinese painting. “Chinese traditional painting usually adopts a generic or universal view on the subject matter, thereby rendering it rather formulaic. What I attempt to do is to go beyond what Chinese painting represents by focusing on the uniqueness of the present. It is also a journey of reflection on myself, my identity and my relationship with Chinese painting as a genre.”
